Oscar winner Cate Blanchett has been appointed a global Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the United Nations’ Refugee Agency.
The Carol star has been involved with the organisation for the past year, but on Monday (02May16), she officially announced her new role within the foundation.
“I am deeply proud to take on this role,” Blanchett said in a statement. “There has never been a more crucial time to stand with refugees and show solidarity. We are living through an unprecedented crisis, and there must be shared responsibility worldwide. It feels like we’re at a fork in the road. Do we go down the compassionate path or do we go down the path of intolerance?
“As a mother, I want my children to go down the compassionate path. There’s much more opportunity, there’s much more optimism and there is a solution down that path.”
Blanchett, who is a mum of four kids, recently returned from a UNHCR mission trip to Jordan, where she met refugee families displaced by the ongoing conflict in Syria.
She also met with refugees in Lebanon last year (15), when she heard their first-hand experience about the journeys they took to escape the war in their homeland.
Blanchett follows in the footsteps of fellow global goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie, who has worked with the UNHCR for years.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the newest investor in an organic beverage business and plans to donate his shares back to the indigenous people responsible for farming the product.
The Oscar winner and environmental advocate has joined the advisory board of New York-based startup Runa after making an investment in the fair trade firm.
All of Runa’s products are made from guayusa, a caffeinated tea leaf native to the Ecuadorian Amazon. The plant is sustainably produced by more than 3,000 indigenous farming families – the same farmers who will reap the benefits of DiCaprio’s shares from Runa’s profits.
“I am so proud to join with Runa in supporting the indigenous people of the Amazon,” DiCaprio said in a statement. “The future of these communities, and many like them across the world, are at risk as their native lands are exploited for natural resource and agricultural development. Sustainable farming practices are key to helping ensure a brighter future for so many local people.
“We must all do everything we can to help indigenous and local people who too often suffer the worst environmental degradation, and are most at risk from climate change.
“Empowering them to stand up and fight back against the outside interests that threaten their survival is a cause that must be championed,” he added.
DiCaprio isn’t the only celebrity to invest in Runa – Channing Tatum was an early investor, while his Magic Mike co-star Adam Rodriguez and comedian Marlon Wayans have also given funds to the firm.
And in addition to serving on Runa’s advisory board, The Revenant actor has also sat on the boards of environmental organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund, Global Green USA, International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

A representative for Arsenio Hall has blasted Sinead O’Connor for suggesting the comedian/actor had a role to play in Prince’s death.
The singer, who scored a massive international hit with her cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U, blamed Arsenio for providing the music icon with drugs that may have killed him in a bizarre post on her Facebook page.
Sinead wrote: “Two words for the DEA investigating where (sic) prince got his drugs over the decades… Arsenio Hall (AKA Prince’s and Eddie Murphy’s b**ch).”
TMZ reports the Irish star has actually reported Arsenio to officials at the Carver County Sheriff’s department, who are investigating Prince’s death.
The unprovoked attack and claims prompted a quick response from Hall’s aides, who shot down Sinead’s comments on Monday (02May16).
A rep for Arsenio insists her allegation is “absolutely false, ridiculous and absurd.”
Sinead has made previous claims against Prince himself, accusing the late music legend of punching her and holding her against her will.
Speaking about her relationship with Prince in an interview in Norway in November 2014, O’Connor said, “I did meet him a couple of times. We didn’t get on at all. In fact, we had a punch-up.
“He summoned me to his house after Nothing Compares 2 U. I made it without him. I’d never met him… He said he didn’t like me saying bad words in interviews. So I told him to f**k off! He got quite violent. I had to escape out of his house at five in the morning. He packed a bigger punch than mine.”
Prince died at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota last month (21Apr16).
Unconfirmed reports suggest he was struggling with a dependency on painkillers for a hip injury in the weeks leading up to his death.
An autopsy carried out on the day after his passing proved inconclusive and results from tests to determine a cause of death will not be available for weeks.

Olivia Munn’s mum knew her daughter had made it as an actress when she started picking up the bill for family meals.
The Newsroom star insists her mother wasn’t impressed with her success until she started paying for family feasts.
“When I could buy the entire family dinner, that was my mom’s bar for success,” Olivia told Entertainment Tonight.
“We were at a big Chinese restaurant and someone went to go pay – one of the uncles – and my mom went, ‘No, no, no! You pay, you pay! She pay. She pay now!’ My mom is very big on me paying for things now that I have some money.”
And the next thing that will impress mum, Kim Schmid, will be when Olivia’s boyfriend, sportsman Aaron Rodgers, asks her to marry him.
“A lot of people ask me, ‘Do you like her boyfriend?'” Kim shared, “All my brothers and sister, and my nieces and nephews – they can’t wait for them to get married.”
Olivia has been dating Aaron since 2014.

“My booty is hanging out and it’s a little bit cold. And it’s hard to pee.” Madonna’s revealing black ensemble by Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci left little to the imagination at Monday’s (02May16) Met Gala. The 57 year old wore a corset with her breasts only covered by black lace, while a wide black strap covered the crack on her otherwise bare bottom.

Mila Kunis was ready to ditch her selfishness when she became a mother.
The 32-year-old actress welcomed daughter Wyatt with husband Ashton Kutcher in 2014, and the couple quickly settled into parenthood. With a little one to look out for, Mila left her old ways behind to put her tot first – and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I reprioritised my life, in all honesty,” the star told Entertainment Tonight. “I travelled through all my 20s and I was very selfish… In a good way, not in a way I regret. And I think having a kid made me realise how incredibly selfless I want to be.
“It does change the way you think and look at life. I would never trade it for the world… But I know that when we decided to have a kid, we were ready to no longer be selfish. Or at least start the process, because innately, as humans, we are really selfish people.”
Wyatt has even helped Mila learn new things about herself, such as how to be a great partner and wife to Ashton as well as a strong woman in order to be a responsible mother.
She manages her time better now she’s a parent too seeing as her daughter dictates what time she’s up in the morning.
“I can let loose as much as I want, but at 6:45 in the morning she’s awake, so so am I,” Mila grinned. “They don’t care that I let loose the night before… Honestly, I don’t know what letting loose means, probably not going to sleep at 9:30.”
With this outlook on life and being a parent, the title of Mila’s new movie, Bad Moms, couldn’t be further from the truth. She stars alongside fellow mothers Kristen Bell, Christina Applegate, Jada Pinkett Smith, Kathryn Hahn, and Annie Mumolo, with the film due out later this year (16).

Rita Ora has posed up a storm with Beyonce after she was accused of having an affair with the singer’s husband Jay Z by her fans.
The pair took a selfie together while inside the star-studded 2016 Met Gala bash on Monday (2May16), which took place in New York City. The picture, which appeared to be taken on Snapchat, shows a smiling Beyonce alongside Rita, captioned ‘Family’.
Rita and Beyonce’s rumour squashing moment comes after the I Will Never Let You Down singer felt the wrath of the superstar’s fans when she was thought to be the “Becky” on Beyonce’s Lemonade track Sorry.
In the song, Beyonce sings about how her unfaithful lover should call “Becky with the good hair”, which set fans on the trail of the alleged mystery mistress.
Rita then stirred the rumour mill when she stepped out two days after the record dropped, in a replica of Beyonce’s red and white Gucci outfit she wore in the video for Formation.
Then the 25-year-old singer became a target for the Beyhive after she posted a photo of herself in a bra adorned with lemons on Snapchat following the April 23 (16) release of Beyonce’s visual album, Lemonade.
Soon after Rita took to Twitter to deny she was the woman associated with the controversial lyrics.
“I never usually address tabloid gossip but let me be clear, these rumours are false,” Rita, who signed with Jay Z’s Roc Nation in 2008, tweeted several days after. “I have nothing but the upmost respect for Beyonce. Let’s continue enjoying Lemonade.”
Designer Rachel Roy was also pulled into the firing line, but spoke out to deny the claims.
Rita looked stunning in a silver, feather Vera Wang creation as she attended the fashion gala on Monday evening.
However Beyonce, who attended the event without husband Jay Z, stole the show in an impossibly tight, peach coloured, rubber dress studded with gems.

Olivia Munn treated her mum to a new house one Mother’s Day only to learn she didn’t really want to live there.
Kim Schmid actually asked her actress daughter to buy her the place and then revealed she just didn’t want anyone new moving into the neighbourhood.
“She wanted the house a couple doors down from hers, so I got her that for one Mother’s Day,” Olivia told news show Entertainment Tonight. “My mum will always let me know what she wants for Mother’s Day.”
But Kim explained she didn’t actually want to live in the new house: “They (neighbours) sold the house, and wanted someone to move in next to me. That’s why I asked her, ‘Can you get that house for me?'”
“It’s the most anti-social thing you can do, is buy the house next door to you, because you don’t want somebody else to buy it and move in,” Olivia joked. “That’s literally how anti-social my family is.”
But, in snapping up the place next door, the Munn family now monopolises the block.
“My mum lives on the corner, and then my aunt lives right next door, and then next door to her is the house I bought for my mum, which my brother lives in, and then there’s my sister who lives next,” Olivia revealed. “So it’s four of them right in a row, just all right there.”
And with America’s Mother’s Day just a few days away, Munn doesn’t know how to top the house as a gift.
But she won’t be sending mum a card, adding Kim is not overly sentimental and used to throw away cards her kids made her.
“I had five kids, and had so many (cards),” the Vietnam native explained. “Because we were moving around a lot, I cannot keep so many things… If you don’t like it, you throw away. You’re moving again.”

Actress Kerry Washington confirmed reports she is pregnant by showing off her baby bump at the Met Gala on Monday night (02May16).
Hours before the Scandal star walked the red carpet at the annual New York fashion bash, speculation surfaced Kerry and her husband, former American footballer Nnamdi Asomugha, are expecting a sibling for their two-year-old daughter Isabelle.
While the usually private star stayed silent on the gossip, she let her actions speak for themselves by cradling her growing belly while wearing a black sequined Marc Jacobs gown at the star-studded event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
While Kerry, who also showed off new magenta-streaked hair, walked up the museum’s famous stairs, reporters on the sidelines congratulated her on the baby news, to which the actress replied, “thank you!”, according to E! News.
And Kerry wasn’t the only mum-to-be proudly showing off a baby bump – actresses Emily Blunt and Olivia Wilde also wore gowns to display their pregnancies, while Blake Lively concealed her stomach with a flowing pink Burberry gown.
The theme of of fashion’s biggest night was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, after the Met exhibition of the same name, which takes a close look at the impact technology has on fashion.
Many stars opted to don silver to follow the futuristic theme, including Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, her half-sister Kylie Jenner and boyfriend Tyga, Brie Larson, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Lady Gaga, Jourdan Dunn, Cindy Crawford, and Demi Lovato, among others.
Also in attendance were stars such as Uma Thurman, Jared Leto, Lena Dunham, Emma Watson, Rachel McAdams, Nicki Minaj, Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Stone, Amy Schumer, Kate Hudson, Nick Jonas, The Weeknd and will.i.am.
This year’s (16) Costume Institute Gala Benefit was co-chaired by Taylor Swift, who showed off her legs in a sexy silver Louis Vuitton mini dress, actor Idris Elba, who wore a classic Tom Ford tuxedo, British designer Jonathan Ive, and U.S. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, among others.

Beyonce walked the red carpet at the Met Gala without husband Jay Z, following cheating allegations sparked from her new album Lemonade.
The pop superstar reignited rumours her husband of eight years had been unfaithful when she released the chart-topping record last month (Apr16), as the tracks featured lyrics detailing a broken marriage.
Many fans were quick to assume the pointed words were about the rapper, but she appeared to put the rumours to rest by dedicating song Halo to her “beautiful husband” during her tour opening show in Miami, Florida last week (27Apr16).
“I want to dedicate this song to my family, thank you guys for supporting me. I want to dedicate this song to my beautiful husband, I love you so much,” she told the crowd at Marlins Park. “I love you so much. Blue, I love you so much.”
But during Monday’s (02May16) annual fashion bash at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Beyonce posed for photographers by herself, wearing a custom Givenchy gown made out of nude latex and embellished with pearls.
Moments before she hit the red carpet solo, Beyonce’s younger sister Solange, whose director husband Alan Ferguson was also not by her side, showed off her bright lemon yellow dress by designer David Laport, and topped it off with thigh-high yellow latex leggings.
Ironically, the Met Gala was the event that sparked infidelity rumours in the first place, when surveillance footage appeared to show Solange kicking and punching her brother-in-law as they left a party at the Standard Hotel following the annual fashion bash in 2014.
The Drunk In Love hitmaker later issued a statement declaring her husband and younger sister had “worked through” their disagreement, while Solange insisted she was “at peace” with the incident.
This year (16), two stars that did come together were supermodel Gigi Hadid and former One Direction star Zayn Malik, who made their first public appearance together as a couple at the Met Gala. The pop star even donned metal arm braces with his black Tommy Hilfiger suit to go along with the gala’s technology and future theme.
Loved up couples Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs, The Weeknd and Bella Hadid, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, and Kate Mara and Jamie Bell also appeared on the red carpet together, but new lovebirds Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom walked the red carpet separately, despite each adding electronic toys Tamagotchis to their ensembles.
Bloom prominently carried one in his suit pocket, while Katy hung one from her purse.
